A Modern Witch’s Guide to Living By the Wheel of the Year

It’s very likely that you already know what your zodiac sign is. It’s possible that you even know what your moon and rising signs are. But did you know that the entire calendar year is associated with all of the astrological signs and houses, with every season corresponding to a sign for very specific purposes? I’ve been a witch for years and I recently just discovered this myself, thanks to two of the greatest books about astrology and magick that I have ever come across.

Every season of our lives is broken down into the houses of astrology to correspond with specific energies that enhance certain areas of our reality, allowing us to heal, find direction spiritually when we get lost, provide insights into who we truly are, and help us manifest the life that we dream of. By utilizing the following herbs, crystals, foods, and other materials that correspond with each season and zodiac sign, you will develop a deep spiritual connection with your Higher Self and the entire universe, enhancing your intuition and providing you with an inner peace you’ve never known.

A few examples of putting these correspondences to use would be finding the zodiac sign that we are currently positioned in, taking a look at the list of herbs and other materials for that sign and season, and utilizing them in the following ways:

  • Applying scented oils, plant-enhanced waters, or plant-based resins to magickal tools in order to charge them
  • Putting dried herbs, flower, bark, or leaves from corresponding plants and trees in talismans and amulets
  • Burning incense to send prayers and messages to the Divine
  • Scenting or dressing candles with herbs and oils
  • Cleansing your sacred space by burning purifying herbs

According to Skye Alexander, author of Magickal Astrology, “By aligning yourself with the cycle of the seasons and the twelve-point pattern of the zodiac wheel, you’ll likely arrive at a deeper, more harmonious connection with the earth and the heavens – which can also enhance your magick work.” Having a basic knowledge and understanding of the twelve zodiac signs and their effect on the world enables you to create more powerful, effective spells and rituals through utilizing the planetary positions and energies. Let’s take a look at the astrological year, beginning with Aries.

Aries energy is raw, primal, vigorous, dynamic, assertive, spontaneous, and masculine. As a cardinal fire sign, Aries represents spirit in action, inspiration, and the drive to break free from the collective to express the self independently.

“Aries is the eternal child of promise, that is the first spark that is separate from the Source of all. Aries discovers selfhood through a head long rush into the universe that is new and fresh because it is seen as new through the eyes of Aries. As Aries matures, the quest is for true identity.” – From Ivo Dominguez, author of Practical Astrology for Witches & Pagans

Aries Energy

This is the time to stand up for yourself, to push for exactly what you want. While the sun is in Aries, make connections with nature’s first rush of life and move outward into the world, embracing life’s challenges and journey. Focus on yourself and what you need to feel fulfilled. Be bold, take risks, meet new people, start a project, experiment, enjoy pleasures. Don’t deliberate – act.

While the sun is in Aries, work magick to inspire, bless, or begin new endeavors, especially those you want to happen quickly. At this time, you can also work magick to overcome obstacles, meet challenges, break away from someone else’s influence, or stimulate movement in stagnant situations. Spells to increase physical vitality can also benefit from the energy of Aries.
